Cross country: Phillip Rocha of Arcadia runs scorching winning time at Mt. SAC

Phillip Rocha of Arcadia didn’t just establish himself as the No. 1 cross country runner in Southern California on Saturday. He caused people to mumble, “Wow” after his performance at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational.

Rocha won the boys’ team sweepstakes race in 14 minutes, 24 seconds, the second-fastest ever on the course.

Great Oak won the team title with 40 points ahead of second-place Dana Hills, which finished with 86.

Earlier on Friday, Austin Tamagno of Brea ran 14:37 in Division III. He set the course record last year at 14:23. Jack Van Scoter of Flintridge Prep won Division V in 14:45.

In the girls’ competition on Saturday, Great Oak won the team sweepstakes with 37 points.

Holly Lung of Arcadia finished first in 17:17. Evelyn Mandel of Great Oak was second in 17:26.
