New All-Star game rules

Share

Rules new to the All-Star game this year:

A designated hitter will be utilized by both teams regardless of whether the game is played in a National League or American League ballpark. The NL’s DH will be chosen by the team manager; the AL DH will be selected by fan voting.

A pitcher who starts a regular-season game on the Sunday immediately preceding the All-Star game will be ineligible to pitch in the game and will be replaced on the roster. However, he will still be recognized as an All-Star and is invited to be introduced in uniform and participate in other festivities.

One position player has been added to each team, boosting the rosters to 21 position players and 13 pitchers.

Each manager will designate one position player as eligible to return to the game in the event of an injury after all position players have been utilized. Such a rule for catchers already existed.
