Dodgers and Angels alter spring-training ticket prices

The $90 seat is out at Camelback Ranch this spring, and free parking is in.

The Dodgers have quietly eliminated the 198-seat VIP section at their spring home, in which fans were offered such perks as preferred parking, food coupons, sunscreen and “cool, scented towels.”

“Based on fan feedback, we determined that premium seating in spring training wasn’t necessary,” Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said Wednesday.

Those VIP seats were sold for $90 last spring, the highest price in the Cactus or Grapefruit leagues. The seats will now cost $42 or $47 as part of a section of prime box seats.

The Dodgers have raised prices by $2 on all tickets to cover the cost of free parking, including shuttles and pedal carts to transport fans from parking lots.

By eliminating the need to stop and pay for parking, Rawitch said, the Dodgers hope to alleviate the traffic congestion that materialized around the Camelback Ranch entrances during the inaugural season last spring.

The Dodgers charged $5 for parking last spring. The ticket surcharge is not expected to generate additional revenue for the Dodgers, with $5 per car roughly equivalent to $2 per head, Rawitch said.

The Dodgers and Chicago White Sox share Camelback Ranch, and each team charges the same prices. The prices this spring range from $26 to $47 between the bases to $10 or $12 for a spot on the outfield grass.

The Angels raised the price of the best seats at Tempe Diablo Stadium by $1 or $1.50 but froze the prices on grandstand and lawn seats. The prices this spring range from $29 and $23 for seats between the bases, with lawn seating still at $6. The Angels charged $5 for parking last spring; the fee for this spring was not available Wednesday.

The Angels open Cactus League play March 4, against the White Sox in Tempe. The Dodgers open against the White Sox on March 5.
