Andrew Bynum’s knee surgery is set for July 28

For the second time in three years, Lakers starting center Andrew Bynum will have surgery on his knee.

Bynum will have arthroscopic surgery July 28 to repair torn cartilage in his right knee, a Lakers spokesman said Tuesday. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek in New York.

Bynum, 22, said during his exit interview last month that he expected to have the surgery July 18, but his doctor didn’t have an opening for the surgery until later this month.

Lakers public relations director John Black said the team would have a timetable for Bynum’s recovery after the surgery.

“Supposedly he’ll be 100% by training camp,” Black said.

The Lakers training camp will start in late September — earlier than normal — because the team is scheduled to play exhibition games in London and Barcelona in October.

Bynum, 22, had his right knee drained three times, including before Games 1 and 5 of the NBA Finals against Boston in June. He also had it drained in late June before he went to South Africa to watch the World Cup. He’s still on vacation in Europe, traveling to Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Bynum suffered a hyperextended right knee during Game 6 of the Western Conference first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 30.

A seven-foot, 280-pounder, Bynum impressed his teammates, coaches and management by continuing to play in pain and with limitations, because of his swollen knee, including in the NBA Finals.

He averaged 7.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 25 minutes during the Finals.

Bynum underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left kneecap in 2008 after he missed the final 46 regular-season games and all of the playoffs because of a partially dislocated kneecap.
