Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez could miss the season

New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said it’s possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez could sit out the entire season while recovering from hip surgery.

The 37-year-old Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip last week. The team said the rehabilitation time was expected to be six months, which would sideline the star slugger until the All-Star break.

On Friday, Cashman said it was possible A-Rod could be out all year.

The Yankees signed free agent Kevin Youkilis during the off-season to play third base while Rodriguez is out.

Cashman said Rodriguez is doing everything “in his power to put himself in the position to get back and be healthy and productive.”

49ers’ Crabtree is cleared

San Francisco’s district attorney won’t file criminal charges against 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree after reviewing evidence of an alleged sexual assault in a hotel after the team’s playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers.

After examining a “thorough investigation” submitted by police, Dist. Atty. George Gascon said Friday his office determined that no charges would be filed “at this time.”

A few hours after Darrelle Revis said he was “speechless” about rampant trade talk, new Jets General Manager John Idzik reached out to the star cornerback to ask to “give us a chance” to evaluate the entire roster.

Idzik told NBC’s Pro Football Talk on Friday that Revis “reacted well” to the phone call, which came after the general manager, owner Woody Johnson and Coach Rex Ryan were noncommittal about the cornerback’s future with the team.

Former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has been hired to fill the same post with the St. Louis Rams, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Penn State’s negotiator for civil claims involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky said the school has been in talks with 28 people and settlement discussions with some claimants could soon produce results.

USC officially announced the enrollment of seven freshman football players who will participate in spring practice.

The players are quarterback Max Browne, running back Justin Davis, defensive lineman Kenny Bigelow, receiver Darreus Rogers and defensive backs Su’a Cravens, Chris Hawkins and Leon McQuay III.

Browne, the Gatorade national player of the year from Skyline High in Sammamish, Wash.; Davis (Stockton Lincoln), Cravens (Murrieta Vista Murrieta), Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga) and McQuay (Armwood Seffner, Fla.) have been attending classes since the start of the spring semester. Bigelow (Eastern Christian Academy, Elkton, Md.) was recently cleared by USC and the NCAA’s Eligibility Center.

Rogers (Carson) signed with USC last year but was not cleared until near the end of the season.

Chris Wood shot an eight-under 64 for a three-stroke lead over Michael Campbell, Simon Khan and Alexander Noren after the third round of the Qatar Masters at Doha.

Second-round leaders Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer faltered. Garcia (70) fell into a tie for fifth place, four strokes back. Kaymer (72) was six strokes behind.

Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley has been named the Gatorade national runner of the year in girls’ cross-country. A junior who hasn’t lost a high school cross-country race during her three-year varsity career, Baxter was presented her award Friday at school by track star Allyson Felix.
