Chiefs’ Johnson is suspended

The Kansas City Chiefs have suspended running back Larry Johnson until Nov. 9.

The club is off this week, so Johnson will sit out one game, at Jacksonville on Nov. 8.

The three-sentence news release issued Wednesday night said only that Johnson was suspended for conduct detrimental to the club.

Johnson used a gay slur twice within a 24-hour period Sunday night and Monday, first on his Twitter account and then again Monday morning after telling reporters he was not talking.

Jones is out

Walter Jones has gone on the Seattle Seahawks’ injured reserve list, ending the six-time All-Pro left tackle’s season and perhaps his career.

Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday the 35-year-old Jones still has pain that is “not bearable” in his surgically repaired left knee.

Mora is not ruling out a third surgery for the nine-time Pro Bowl selection, but Jones says he wants to come back in 2010.

Quarterbacks

Winless Tampa Bay has changed starting quarterbacks again, with rookie Josh Freeman taking over the offense. Freeman made his NFL debut Sunday, playing two series in the fourth quarter of the Buccaneers’ 35-7 loss to the New England Patriots in London. . . . Jake Delhomme will remain Carolina’s starting quarterback despite an NFL-high 13 interceptions in six games. Coach John Fox announced after practice Wednesday that he still thinks Delhomme gives the Panthers “the best chance to win” and won’t bench him for Sunday’s game at Arizona, something he contemplated earlier in the week.

Injuries

Running back Brian Westbrook will be a game-time decision for the Philadelphia Eagles against the New York Giants on Sunday after suffering a concussion earlier this week. “We’ll see how he does this week,” Eagles Coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. . . . Newly signed kick returner Allen Rossum is out two to four weeks because of a hamstring injury sustained on his first return with the Dallas Cowboys. Rossum was supposed to handle kickoffs and punts but went down in the first quarter Sunday against Atlanta. Felix Jones will be the primary kickoff returner and Patrick Crayton will handle punts. Crayton returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown against the Falcons. . . . Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw traveled to North Carolina to have his bothersome right ankle examined by specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.
