Kings’ Scuderi fined for hit on opponent

Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi was fined an undisclosed amount by the NHL on Monday for his low hit on Columbus’ Jason Chimera on Sunday at Staples Center.

Scuderi wasn’t suspended for the hit, which occurred during the first period and wasn’t penalized by the on-ice officials. The NHL reviews debatable plays and can impose a fine or suspension.

Scuderi crouched before hitting Chimera at or below the right knee as Chimera skated up the right side, sending the Blue Jackets’ winger tumbling head over heels. Chimera hit his head on the ice and reopened a cut above his right eye, but returned to the game.

Colin Campbell, the NHL’s senior executive vice president of hockey operations and chief disciplinarian, confirmed the fine but did not elaborate.

The NHL didn’t suspend Columbus’ Derek Dorsett, who appeared to come off the bench to avenge the hit, ruling he took to the ice on a line change.
