Marcus Smart pushes fan in stands during Oklahoma State loss [Video]

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State’s star guard, will likely face disciplinary action from the university or Big 12 Conference, including a possible suspension, after going into the stands to push a Texas Tech fan Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas.

The Cowboys were trailing by two points when Smart ran back on defense during a Red Raiders fastbreak and blocked a layup by Jaye Crockett with 6.2 seconds left. Smart, who was called for a foul on the play, stumbled over a person along the baseline and fell in front of the first row of stands.

After Smart was helped to his feet, he turned toward the stands and immediately walked to a fan identified as Jeff Orr, who was obviously saying something, and pushed him with both hands to the chest. Orr stumbled backward but did not fall.

Smart was immediately escorted away by teammates but continued to point and talk back to Orr as he left the court. Smart, who had 22 points, was assessed a technical foul but was not ejected from the game, although he remained on the bench when play resumed.

Crockett, who finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, made one of two free throws after Dusty Hannahs made the technical foul shot to provide the final margin in a 65-61 victory for Texas Tech (12-11, 4-6 in conference). It was the fourth-consecutive loss for Oklahoma State (16-7, 4-6), which entered the game ranked No. 19.

Neither Smart, a 6-foot-4 sophomore who was a preseason All-America selection and widely considered a top-five pick in the 2014 NBA draft, nor his teammates were made available for interviews after the game.

Cowboys Coach Travis Ford was a bit evasive in his postgame interview, saying of the controversial play, “I didn’t see it yet. I want to make sure I see it and see what happened. I’m still trying to figure it out.”

The Big 12 Conference reportedly is going to review the incident Sunday, when a ruling is likely on any punishment for Smart.
