Arroyo Grande managed two first downs in the first half of its Western Division championship against Gardena Serra, and one came by penalty.

The Cavaliers dominated on both sides of the ball in taking a 28-3 halftime lead, holding the Eagles to 49 yards of offense. Arroyo Grande got its field goal only after taking over at the Serra 37-yard line in the first quarter and moving the ball all of four yards.

The Eagles appear to have an advantage at one position with kicker Garrett Owens, who made a 51-yard field goal and has booted both kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Serra’s Francisco Olloqui missed a 27-yard attempt late in the second quarter.

Otherwise, it’s all Serra. Quarterback Conner Preston shrugged off a slow start and has completed seven of 14 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Shaquille Richard ran for 110 yards in 12 carries. Receiver Marqise Lee has two catches for 31 yards and two touchdowns.

The key sequence came when Preston hit George Farmer in stride for a 59-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter and then Serra’s Pete Lauderdale recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.
