Baseball: Sons of ex-Hart players come through for Valencia

Mike Zeile and Jim Bonds were standout baseball players for Newhall Hart in the 1980s, and their sons, Shane and James, came through for Valencia on Wednesday in a 9-8, nine-inning Foothill League victory over Hart.

Shane Zeile hit a 2-and-0 pitch over the right-field fence in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off home run. Bonds had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Valencia (7-1, 3-0) opened a 5-0 lead over Hart (9-2, 3-1), but the Indians scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. The two schools combined to use eight pitchers. David Hausman threw two shutout innings of relief to pick up the victory. Dallas Bacon had three hits for Hart. Parker Greenberg had three bunt singles for Valencia. Zeile, a UCLA signee, also had two doubles.

Golden Valley defeated West Ranch, 5-4. Ryan Alvarez had two hits and two RBIs.

In the Sunset League, top-ranked Huntington Beach Edison (10-1, 4-0) got two hits from Eric Snyder in a 3-2 win over Los Alamitos. Dalton Douty and Jon Torres pitched for the Chargers.

In the Marmonte League, Daniel Barnett had four hits and three RBIs in Newbury Park’s 15-7 win over Agoura. Levi Shordon and Reece Schmidt combined on a six-hitter to give Simi Valley a 4-2 win over Moorpark. Calabasas defeated Royal, 12-7, with Alex Rubanowitz hitting a grand slam and Jordan Bass hitting two home runs.Westlake defeated Thousand Oaks, 7-2. Blake Yuckert hit a home run. Wilmington Banning ended a nine-game win streak by Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 3-2. Alexis Martinez struck out two batters with the bases loaded for the Pilots (7-3). San Fernando defeated Arleta, 6-3.

Woodland Hills El Camino Real defeated Palisades, 4-2. Justin Russell had two hits.

Dana Hills picked up a 5-4 win over El Toro. Trevor Scott hit a two-run home run and got the win in relief. Brian Choi had the game-winning single.

Oaks Christian defeated Nordhoff, 13-3. Phil Bickford struck out 11. Evan Ocello had three hits. Dominic Smith struck out 16 in Gardena Serra’s 4-3 win over St. Bernard.

In Arizona, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (8-3) defeated La Jolla Country Day, 4-2. Arden Pabst had two hits and three RBIs. Montclair Prep was beaten by Horizon of Scottsdale, Ariz., 2-1. Max Fried struck out 12 for the Mounties. Horizon scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.
