Smoking Blamed for Fire at Apartment
Careless smoking was the apparent cause of a fire Thursday that routed 27 occupants of a three-story Wilshire-District apartment house and caused damage estimated at $40,000, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.
Temporary shelter was arranged at John Burroughs Junior High School, but American Red Cross spokeswoman Barbara Wilkes said no one showed up.
Firefighters said the blaze at the nine-unit structure at 1126 S. 4th Ave. began on the second floor and involved part of the third.
