Juli Inkster tied a tournament record with an eight-under-par 64 on the Del Monte course Friday and moved within one stroke of leader Bob Eastwood after two rounds of the $200,000 Spalding Invitational golf tournament.

Eastwood, who opened with a 64 at the Carmel Valley Country Club on Thursday, posted a 70 at Del Monte in the second round for a 36-hole total of 134. Inkster, George Archer and Mark Brooks were at 135.

Inkster, one of five women pros competing against the men, tied the tournament’s Del Monte record. Rick Acton had a 64 in 1982 and Patty Sheehan had a 64 last year.

Inkster hit 17 greens in regulation and needed only 28 putts, three of them on a par-3 hole where she took a bogey. She had nine birdies.

“I was rolling the ball well,” she said of her putting stroke. “In the first round, I missed all day. Today I made the putts.”

Archer posted a 66 at Carmel Valley while Brooks shot a 68 at Del Monte Friday. Mark O’Meara, with 66 at Del Monte, and Tim Norris, with 68 at Carmel Valley were tied at 136. Defending champ Johnny Miller and Kathy Whitworth both had 70s at Del Monte and were at 138 with Peter Oosterhuis, who had a 66 at Carmel Valley.

The women pros are given distance advantages off the tees.
