Idaho Defeats Irvine Women in Overtime
Idaho outscored UC Irvine, 14-2, in overtime to remain unbeaten with a 72-60, nonconference win in a women’s basketball game Friday night in Crawford Hall.
Irvine had a 58-55 lead when Cheri Graham made two free throws with 11 seconds to play. But Idaho added a free throw and a layup at the buzzer by Mary Westerwelle to send the game into overtime. Idaho took advantage of six Anteater tunovers in overtime to win its 12th straight.
Irvine (9-3) got 22 points and 10 rebounds from Graham, who came into the game averaging 19.3 points per game. Westerwelle led Idaho with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
In other action:
Chapman 58, Boise State 42-- Panther senior forward Missy Firpo led all players with 21 points as Chapman improved its preseason record to 11-2. Chapman’s 6-4 senior center Delisa Carter had 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Panthers, who led by 12 at halftime, won the game at the free throw line. Chapman was 20-for-31 from the line; Boise State was 0-for-2. The Panthers, who are the CCAA defending co-champions, are 8-0 against Division I schools and open conference play next Thursday at Cal State LA.
In junior college action:
Saddleback 57, Mt. San Antonio College 30--Sophomore forward Lisa Jones and freshman center Corren Cumin combined for 32 points to lead the Gauchos to a South Coast League victory over the Mounties at Saddleback. Jones had 20 points while Cumins had 12 and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Gauchos are 13-2 overall, 2-0 in league.
Fullerton 49, Cerritos 40--Diane Rockwood scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Hornets at Fullerton. Shelly Bowcutt led Cerritos (1-1 in conference) with 15 points. Fullerton (12-3, 2-0) plays at Cypress Wednesday.
