The pictures of the starving people in Ethiopia are haunting the whole world, but they are especially poignant to restaurateurs, who march into their kitchens every morning to face a veritable cornucopia. All over the city, restaurant employees have been raising money to send to Ethiopia; the funds are often being matched by management. Bistango has gone one step further: Monday, the restaurant will host a special evening in support of the Red Cross African Relief Fund. It costs $75, celebrities will be on hand, a special dinner will be served, and further information may be obtained by calling 739-5237.. MOOD INDIGO While it’s raw here, it’s balmy in New Zealand, where a particularly bounteous crop of blueberries has spilled over into our restaurants. Dessert chefs, naturally enough, are playing splendid variations of blues in the night: Among the better strains are blueberry lemon tart at Chardonnay, blueberry chocolate terrine at Spago, blueberry Napolean and blueberry miroir at La Couronne, blueberry Pavlova at Billabong. The bumper crop, we’re told will last until April, with the really big blueberries on their way. How big are they, Johnny? Well, as we used to say in Alaska, it takes two of them to make a dozen.
