PCAA Roundup : UC Santa Barbara Beats Long Beach at the Line, 84-73

Share

UC Santa Barbara’s Scott Fisher, a rugged individual under a basket, hardly raised an eyebrow when he was told that the Gauchos attempted 46 foul shots Monday night in an 84-73 victory over Cal State Long Beach. The Gauchos outscored the 49ers, 35-11, from the foul line.

Fisher, a 6-7, 225-pound junior, always welcomes a physical game, and the 49ers were about as physical as you could get. They committed 32 fouls.

“They’re not bigger than anyone, so they’ve got to push and shove,” Fisher said. “They hold a lot and go hard to the boards, but that’s just good aggressive ball. I like it.”

Fisher muscled his way to a 26-point, 12-rebound performance. He made 8 of 10 free throws, as did teammate Richard Townsend.

But Gaucho guard Connor Henry, who scored 21 points, was the most frequent visitor to the foul line, making 14 of 16 shots.

The parade to the line--UCSB was there 30 times in the second half--bored the 1,139 fans at the Long Beach Arena and astonished Long Beach Coach Ron Palmer.

Fresno State 58, San Jose State 49--Scott Barnes scored 20 points, including eight straight that killed a late San Jose rally, as the Bulldogs improved their record to 2-0 in the PCAA and 7-4 overall at Fresno. The Spartans dropped to 1-2 and 6-6.
