Rock veteran Tina Turner and newcomers Cyndi Lauper and Prince and the Revolution each received five nominations today to lead the performing field for the 27th annual Grammy awards.

In addition, the two female singers and the Minneapolis rock ensemble headed by 26-year-old Prince received nominations for best album of the year, and Lauper and Turner are also up for record of the year.

Lauper, noted as much for her eccentric hair style and clothes as for her hit songs, was also cited for best new artist, song of the year as co-composer of “Time After Time,” and best female pop vocalist for her single, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” which earned her the record of the year nomination. Her nominated album was “She’s So Unusual.”

Turner, whose nominations culminate a comeback from the days when she performed with husband Ike Turner, won female vocal performance nominations in the pop, rock, and rhythm and blues categories for three different singles from her nominated album, “Private Dancer.”

Her record of the year nomination was for “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Prince was nominated for the sound track album from his film “Purple Rain,” which was a surprise box office success last summer.

Prince and the Revolution also received a nomination for producer of the year. Prince alone was nominated for writing the best rhythm and blues song, “I Feel for You.”

Other nominees for album of the year were Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and Lionel Richie’s “Can’t Slow Down.”

Rounding out the record-of-the-year nominees were Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” and “The Heart of Rock & Roll” by Huey Lewis and the News.

Kenny Rogers will be host of the awards telecast at the Shrine Auditorium on Feb. 26.
