The Planning Commission on Monday approved plans by Nichiren Shoshu Soka Gakkai of America to build a two-story, 13,570-square-foot church at 1144-48 Wilshire Blvd. The site now serves as a parking lot for the group’s headquarters and its World Peace Ikeda Church. Under the approved design plan, the 500-seat assembly area will be be converted to offices.
The commission also authorized a three-level parking structure at 1212-1220 7th St., about 300 feet from the church. The group had originally planned underground parking, but redesigned the project to avoid traffic and parking problems in the residential neighborhood surrounding the church.
