Olympic gold medalist Tiffany Cohen of Mission Viejo, Calif., won the 500-meter freestyle Thursday as the University of Texas took the first-day lead over USC in the second annual Longhorn Invitational at the Texas Swimming Center.

Texas, the defending NCAA national women’s swimming and diving champion, won eight of 10 individual events to earn 455 points to 439.5 for the Trojans, who won the meet last year.

In addition to Cohen, other top Longhorn performers included sophomore Kara McGrath of Birmingham, Mich., who won the 400 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and Kim Rhodenbaugh, another 1984 Olympian, who captured the 100 breaststroke. Rhodenbaugh edged USC’s Anne Ottenbrite, who won the silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke during the Olympic Games.
