Fullerton Officer’s Killing of Dog

Share

As a 20-year resident of Fullerton, I was appalled to learn of the recent killing of the dog “Dumpy” in his own backyard by a Fullerton police officer.

Fullerton has more than 10,000 dogs that are licensed, not to mention those who may not be licensed. Therefore, it is highly probable that an officer, especially one with an unleashed dog, will be received by a barking dog when entering a yard. The officer should have realized that if he was stopped by Dumpy so would any other intruder have been stopped.

That the officer pointed his gun at Dumpy’s owner compounds my belief that this officer should not be given assignments that involve the protection of residential areas. I shudder to think what would have happened if the owner had reflexively moved toward the dog when she was surprised by the sight and sounds of the officer in her yard. GLENDA ROSEN Fullerton
