The Long Beach Metropolitan YMCA hopes to raise $1.8 million by June to pay off a nearly $1.1-million debt and to build an indoor pool, lockers and shower facilities at the Downtown-Buffum Branch at Long Beach Boulevard and 6th Street. The campaign, announced Wednesday, already has received $540,000, earmarked to help to pay off the debt, from two anonymous donors. The debt is the result of increased interest rates and construction costs after a 1973-74 fund drive to build the downtown building. Chairmen of the current drive, called “The Winning Spirit,” are City Councilman Thomas Clark and attorney Clyde L. Bronn.
