Huckleberry Honey Wins at Santa Anita
Huckleberry Honey found an opening along the rail entering the stretch in Thursday’s $31,000 feature race at Santa Anita and raced to her second straight victory.
Ridden by Laffit Pincay, Huckleberry Honey drew off to finish 1 3/4 lengths in front of Matchpenny, ridden by apprentice Rick Dominguez. Goldenley, ridden by Fernando Toro, finished third, another 1 1/2 lengths back.
The 17-10 favorite, Princess Lurullah, finished fifth, beaten six lengths.
Covering six furlongs in 1:10 3/5, Huckleberry Honey defeated five rivals in the race for older fillies and mares, 4 years old and up, and earned $16,550. The 5-year-old mare had won her last start, a six-furlong allowance race at Santa Anita Jan. 3.
Sent off the 2-1 second choice, Huckleberry Honey paid $6, $4.20 and $3.20. Matchpenny returned $12.40 and $5.20, and Goldenley paid $3.40 to show.
