College Basketball ROUNDUP : Lutheran Misses Slam, Gets Dunked By Baptist

Share

There was a sharp contrast in coaching temperament in the Cal Lutheran gym Friday night, and it had no small bearing on Cal Baptist’s 62-55 victory over the Kingsmen.

One one hand, there was Ed Anderson, who tempered his temper at halftime when he had every right not to. On the other, there was Jerry King, who vented his at center Anthony Davis throughout the first half. King got results in the second half. Anderson did not.

The Cal Lutheran coach stood by the bench mortified as 6-5 center Erik Slattum banged a slam dunk attempt off the back rim 15 seconds before halftime. The miss, followed by a Cal Baptist rebound and jumper by Brad Reynolds with seven seconds left, sent the visitors into the locker room with a 26-23 lead instead of a one-point deficit.

“It was a real turning point,” Anderson said calmly afterwards. “It was a four-point play.”

Everyone was out of it offensively in the game’s opening minutes. The Lancers, who were 11 of 30 in the first half, were held scoreless in the first of play, while the Kingsmen were held scoreless in the first 7:11.

With Davis and junior guard Patrick Green--the game’s leading scorer with 19 points--leading the way, the Lancers embellished their lead to 44-37 with 4:42 left in the game on David Kennedy’s 10-foot bank. Forward Bob Fish of the Kingsmen crashed heavily to the floor on the play and was helped off with a sprained ankle.
