A man on a fishing trip died Sunday when the skiff in which he was riding capsized about 400 yards off Shelter Island, authorities said. Arturo Martinez, 33, of San Diego, was pronounced dead at 1:43 p.m., less than two hours after the 12-foot aluminum skiff was struck by a wake and overturned, said Dave Matticks, a deputy coroner. Matticks said an autopsy, to be performed today, will establish whether Martinez drowned or suffered a heart attack. The accident occurred when the wake from a large unidentified boat upset the skiff, tossing its three occupants into the water, said San Diego Harbor Police Officer Ross Ambers. Another boat came to their aid and took the men to a nearby Harbor Police dock. Martinez and the boat’s pilot, Robert Cronister of Lemon Grove, were then taken by paramedics to Sharp Cabrillo Hospital, where Cronister was held briefly for observation and released. A third man, Brian Waymire, also of Lemon Grove, was not injured. Harbor Police are investigating the incident.
