Man Captured After Restaurant Holdup

A man with an empty pistol robbed a Jack in the Box restaurant on West Manchester Avenue of $2,248, telling his victims that he needed the money to buy food for his sister’s children, police said Sunday.

A suspect, Kenneth Matthews, 26, was captured moments later.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Paul Shoals said Matthews herded five employees into the walk-in refrigerator before fleeing. “He did it so his sister and five kids could eat,” Shoals said.

The bandit used an unloaded pistol because “he didn’t want to hurt anybody,” Shoals said.
