Hotel Under Construction Destroyed by Flames
A 124-unit hotel under construction was destroyed by a fire that could be seen over a wide area around Palm Springs Wednesday night, fire officials reported.
It took nine companies of firefighters more than one hour to subdue the blaze in the Shilo Hotel on North Palm Canyon Drive. Flames billowed up more than 75 feet at times, Palm Springs fire dispatcher Rick Lee said.
Numerous residents of nearby apartments and hotels were evacuated, Lee said.
Cause of the blaze was under investigation.
