Tennis Roundup : Wilander Is Upset by Holmes

John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors successfully began their quest for individual records at the $300,000 U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championships at Philadelphia Wednesday night, but third-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden was upset in the second round.

The top-seeded McEnroe, seeking to become the first player to win this tournament four consecutive years, beat Marty Davis, 6-2, 6-3. The second-seeded Connors, gunning for a record fifth U.S. Pro Indoor title, ousted Leif Shiras, 6-2, 6-4.

However, Wilander, the anchor of Sweden’s Davis Cup championship team and the world’s fourth-ranked player, fell 6-4, 6-3 to Greg Holmes, the 1983 NCAA singles champion while at Utah and currently 57th in the computer rankings.

At Key Biscayne Fla., Hana Mandlikova had to rally to defeat Barbara Gerken, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of a $150,000 women’s tournament.

Gerken, a former UCLA student ranked 96th in the world, held leads of 3-0, 40-15 in the third set. She said she faltered when she began to think about a possible victory over the fourth-seeded Mandlikova.

In other matches, top-seeded Martina Navratilova defeated Sharon Walsh, 6-4, 6-4, and second-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd beat Gigi Fernandez of Puerto Rico, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
