NBA Roundup : Cummings Hits Shot, Bucks Win by One

Terry Cummings sank a 19-foot jump shot from the key with 40 seconds remaining Thursday night at Kansas City to lift the Milwaukee Bucks to a 120-119 victory over the Kansas City Kings.

Cummings finished with 34 points, and Sidney Moncrief chipped in 28 as Milwaukee won its sixth straight game and 15th of its last 18. Otis Thorpe scored 22 to lead the Kings.

Mike Woodson hit three baskets to lead an 8-2 Kansas City run, putting the Kings in front, 115-112, with 2:46 remaining. But the Bucks answered with six straight points, including four by Cummings, to take a 118-115 lead with 1:35 left.

LaSalle Thompson sank two free throws, and Eddie Johnson hit a baseline jumper over the next 42 seconds to give Kansas City its final lead at 119-118. But Cummings scored on Milwaukee’s next trip downcourt to hand Kansas City its seventh loss in its last eight games.

The Kings had two chances to win, but Johnson missed a 16-foot jumper with 26 seconds left and Reggie Theus came up short on a three-point shot that was tipped in by Thorpe after the buzzer.

Washington 93, Dallas 92--Gus Williams scored 31 points, and Greg Ballard pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the Bullets past the Mavericks at Landover, Md.

Darren Daye’s dunk with 1:19 left in the game capped a 9-2 run that gave the Bullets a 93-89 lead. The Mavericks’ Rolando Blackman cut it to 93-92 with 26 seconds left, but Dallas didn’t get off another shot.

Detroit 137, Golden State 118--Bill Laimbeer scored 26 points, and Isiah Thomas scored 15 of his 21 in the third quarter at Detroit as the Pistons won their sixth straight game and dealt the Warriors their 13th straight setback.

Denver 119, New Jersey 110--Alex English scored 14 of his 31 points in the third period, and Dan Issel, who announced his end-of-the-season retirement after 15 seasons on Tuesday, scored 20 points to rally the Nuggets past the Nets at Denver.

Cleveland 110, Utah 109--Johnny Davis’ 15-foot jumper with eight seconds remaining at Salt Lake City lifted the Cavaliers to victory over the Jazz.
