Saugus 53, Quartz Hill 39

Saugus High outscoered visiting Quartz Hill High, 19-8, in the second quarter to improve its Golden League record to 2-1.

Holly Lugersoll led the Centurions with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Patti Miller added 12 points.

El Camino 70, Chatsworth 54

Junior center Michelle Kirby scored 12 points in the first quarter to give El Camino Real High an easy West Valley League victory over Chatsworth High.

Kirby, a 6-2 junior center, scored 31 points and 18 rebounds, while teammate Voviette Morgan scored 16 points.

First Lutheran 58, Oak Hill 5

When they were losing, 21-5, at the end of the first quarter, things looked pretty bad for Oak Hill High.

But that was as good as it would get for the Raiders, who were shut out in the three remaining quarters.

Sherry Goodman scored 24 points and Karen Mapp added 15 more for First Lutheran.

Birmingham 65, Polytechnic 36

Birmingham High took another step toward a playoff berth by defeating Polytechnic High in the Valley Girls League game.

The Braves, who are 3-3 in the league and 5-4 overall, won primarily because their swarming defense forced Poly, which is 0-6 in the league, to shoot from the outside.

Four Birmingham starters scored in double figures. Junior center Jamene Washington led Braves scorers with 22 points, while teammate Shagarro Lattin added 13.

N. Hollywood 55, Sylmar 37

North Hollywood High has a history of late wins this season, and this win was as late as any.

After trailing, 25-24, at halftime, the Huskies came back to defeat the Spartans and stretch their Valley Girls League record to 6-0. North Hollywood has now won six of its last seven games in the second half.

Sonja Robertson, who is averaging 21 points a game, led North Hollywood with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Ardonia Hawthorne had 11 points and 8 assists for the Huskies, while Denise Hammond had 10 points.

Van Nuys 53, Monroe 22

Shawn Price, a 5-10 junior forward, scored 26 points and established a personal best with 22 rebounds to help Van Nuys High remain undefeated in the Valley 3-A League. The Wolves are 6-0 in the league and 8-2 overall. Monroe High is 3-3 in the league.

Charnessa Holmes had 10 rebounds and Bridget Mentes had 9 as Van Nuys pulled down a total of 53 rebounds. Guard Bernadette Tillis had 10 assists.

Cleveland 65, Taft 26

Cleveland High made short work of Taft High, which is still looking for its first Valley 4-A win.

Cleveland guard Kim Green made 12 steals and scored 18 points, while Jolanda Lans added 15 points, dished off 11 assists and had seven rebounds. Erica Abson scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds for Cleveland.

Alicia Morton scored 10 points to lead Taft.

Canoga Park 43, Palisades 33

Canoga Park High trailed, 22-15, after three quarters then opened fire. The Hunters scored 28 fourth-quarter points.

Senior Guard Kamela Mallory had 15 of her team-high 17 points in the final period, hitting all five of her attempts from the field.

Granada Hills 45, Verdugo Hills 20

Granada Hills High took a 13-2 first-quarter lead then raced to an easy win, evening its Valley 3-A League record to 3-3.

Junior forward Kristi Barber scored 16 points, had 14 rebounds and two assists to pace the Highlanders. Gloria Fahy added 18 rebounds and nine points, and 5-11 junior center Brooke Hoppe scored 10 points and had five rebounds.

Calabasas 60, Nordhoff 44

Calabasas High defeated Nordhoff High on the strength of its 38-point first half.

Senior forward Shari Gartland scored 22 points and 6-1 center Janet Seligman added 19 rebounds and 10 points. Sophomore Sandi Thomsen had 17 rebounds and senior point guard Dana Astrachan chipped in with 15 points.

W. Valley Chrsitian, 34, Montessori 4

Fourteen points by junior center Trinette Waters and 12 by Holly Seigroth were too much for Montessori High of Calabasas in a nonleague game at Granada Hills High.

Peaches Simon scored all four of Montessori’s points.
