NCAA Midwest Regional Site Is Moved to Houston Campus
The University of Houston and the NCAA have announced that the site of the first and second rounds of the NCAA midwest regional basketball tournament March 15-17 had been moved from The Summit Arena to Hofheinz Pavilon on the Houston campus.
This year’s NCAA tournament has been expanded to 64 teams and at eight first-round sites around the country there will be four games played during the course of one day.
Officials at The Summit were concerned about parking during the afternoon session on Friday, March 15. The logistical problems in the moving of traffic through the already congested area near the arena forced the switch in sites.
The NCAA said it considered having the afternoon session at Hofheinz and the evening session, plus games played on Sunday, at The Summit. But it was decided continuity was needed for the participants.
The Summit, which twice before has been the host for portions of the NCAA tournament, seats 15,500. Hofheinz Arena holds 10,060.
“We’re pleased to have the event on campus, although we won’t have as many seats,” said Houston athletic director Tom Ford.
