Pacific 10 Roundup : Cal Upsets Oregon St., 42-36

UCLA goes into tonight’s game against USC at the Sports Arena in sole possession of first place in the Pacific 10 following California’s surprising 42-36 victory over Oregon State Thursday night at Berkeley.

The loss was Oregon State’s second straight and gives the Beavers a 5-2 conference record. The Bruins are 5-1.

The Beavers (15-3 overall) are ranked 12th and 14th in the polls. The Bears (10-8, 2-6) share last place in the conference with Stanford.

Top scorers for the Bears were sophomore guards Kevin Johnson and Chris Washington with 16 points apiece. Oregon State’s A.C. Green was held to eight points, 11 below his average.

Arizona St. 63, Washington St. 59--The Sun Devils recorded their first conference win at home with their second straight victory. They defeated then-conference leader Oregon State, 83-82, in double overtime at Corvallis, Ore., last Saturday. Arizona State is 9-9 overall, 4-4 in the conference. Washington State is 10-8 and 2-6. Eric Holloway (ASU) 16; Joe Wallace (WSU) 21.

Arizona 69, Washington 56--Pete Williams scored 20 points to lead the Wildcats at Tucson. Both teams are 14-6 overall, 5-3 in the conference. Eddie Smith (A) 15; Paul Fortier (W) 14, Chris Welp (W) 14.

Oregon 61, Stanford 54--Freshman guard Anthony Taylor scored all 10 of his points in the second half as the Bucks pulled away at Stanford. Oregon led at halftime, 31-30. The Ducks are 10-11 overall, 3-5 in the conference. The is Cardinal is 10-8 and 2-6.
