PREP BASKETBALL : Girls Roundup : Carter Leads Magnolia to Orange League Win

Magnolia High School’s Michelle Carter has had a season most players only dream about.

The 6-foot 3-inch junior center, who averages 32 points per game average and has scored 50 points twice this season, had 27 points, 20 rebounds, 6 blocked shots and 5 steals to lead the Sentinels to a 50-44 win over Savanna in Orange League play Thursday night at Savanna.

No other Sentinel scored in double figures.

Venetta Dorlis, a 5-6 junior, had 14 points to lead the Rebels, who fell to 2-4 in league and 10-10 overall.

Magnolia is 2-4 and 7-10.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 59, Bishop Montgomery 34--The Monarchs (6-0 and 19-3) cruised to their sixth straight league triumph behind 12 points from Geri Gainey, 11 points from Holly Wood, and 10 points from Mary Gainey in the Monarchs’ gym.

In Century League action:

Canyon 81, Santa Ana 26--Senior forward Danyell Rogers had 16 points and 22 rebounds and center Angie Nelsen added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Comanches. Canyon is 6-4 and 11-7. Santa Ana fell to 0-10 in league.

Foothill 70, Orange 51--Jennifer Osur scored 20 points and had 8 rebounds and Jill Osur had 15 points and 8 rebounds to pace the league-leading Knights past the second-place Panthers at Orange. Chris McFerson added 10 points for Foothill (10-0, 19-3). Harriet White and Debbie Kerr had 12 each for the Panthers (8-2, 14-4).

Tustin 47, Santa Ana Valley 45--The Tillers controlled a jump ball with eight seconds remaining in the game to preserve the win at Santa Ana Valley. Cathy Smith led all scorers with 23 points and Tammy Bethune had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Falcons. Tustin improved to 5-4 in league and the Falcons fell to 4-6 and 6-10.

In Empire League action:

Esperanza 77, El Dorado 59--The Aztecs led, 37-28, at halftime and breezed past the host Golden Hawks to their 10th straight league victory. Jennafer LaPaglia had 24 points for the seventh-ranked Aztecs. Heidi Olsen and Sharon Warmus added 16 points each for Esperanza (10-0 and 16-4). Jill Matyuch scored 21 points for El Dorado (6-4, 9-8).

Loara 47, Katella 36--Center Shana Beer scored 13 points to lead the host Saxons to the victory. Liz Eldridge had 11 and the Osato sisters, Carolyn and Susan, chipped in 10 points apiece. Sharon Valdez scored 10 points for the Knights. Loara is 8-2, 17-5.

Kennedy 48, Los Alamitos 30--The Irish raced to a 21-12 halftime lead and cruised to the easy win at home. Jawanni Cousett of Kennedy led all scorers with 17 points while teammates Janelle Frese and Ursula Lovely added 12 points apiece. Los Alamitos was led by Kelli Moore’s 14 points.

In Orange League action:

Valencia 61, Anaheim 25--The Tigers routed the visiting Colonists behind 14 points from Steffi Strauss, 13 from Angela Granger and 12 from Stacey Blank. Valencia (3-3 and 9-9) plays host to Savanna on Tuesday.

Brea-Olinda 74, Western 38--The Wildcats remained undefeated with an easy win over the Pioneers at Brea. Pam Chiotti scored 17 points and Jodi Kleber added 14 to lead the Wildcats. Melanie Williams had 15 for the Pioneers. Brea-Olinda (6-0 and 21-0) hosts Anaheim on Tuesday.

In Sunset League action:

Marina 48, Huntington Beach 38--The Vikings’ Dawn Charron led all scorers with 15 points in the game at Huntington Beach. The Vikings improved to 2-4 in league. Huntington Beach, 2-4, 9-11, was led by freshman guard Stefanie Pemper’s 13 points.

Fountain Valley 60, Ocean View 51--Denise Gielarowski and Jill Myers scored 12 points each to lead the host Barons past the second-ranked Seahawks. Trina Vlachos had 20 points to lead Ocean View. Fifth-ranked Fountain Valley is 5-1, 14-6 and Ocean View falls to 5-1, 15-5.

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 56, Estancia 41--Guard Fran Wynn’s 18 points and 10 rebounds paced the Sea Kings to the win at Corona del Mar. Michelle Willard added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Sea Kings, 8-1, 11-5. Guard Karen Rindone 15 points to lead the Eagles, 4-5 in league.

Costa Mesa 39, Laguna Beach 21--Stephanie Swanson, a 5-8 sophomore forward, scored 16 points and had 8 rebounds and 5 steals in the first half to lead the Mustangs to the win in Costa Mesa. Laguna Beach (0-9 and 1-14) was led by Laura Weingarten with eight points. Costa Mesa (7-2 and 9-8) plays at Woodbridge on Monday.

Newport Harbor 49, University 29--Sherri Kemper’s 15 points led the Sailors to the easy win at Newport Harbor. Jorie Nolen had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Suzanne Shriner added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Sailors (5-4, 9-7).

Woodbridge 87, Saddleback 25--Sharon Lyon scored 30 points (on 15-of-18 field goal shooting) to set a Woodbridge single-game scoring record. Lyon broke the old mark of 27 points, set by Arlene Hernandez in 1983. Lyon also had 14 rebounds before leaving the game early in the second half. The Warriors’ Kerry Causey set a school record for assists with 13. Saddleback was led by freshman Monica Walton’s 17 points. Woodbridge (9-0 and 18-3) plays host to Costa Mesa on Monday.

In South Coast League action:

Dana Hills 51, Capistrano Valley 32--The Dolphins used a full-court press to subdue the Cougars in the game at Dana Hills. Shelia McCrea had 14 points and Roberta Forster 12 to lead the Dolphins, 4-4, 4-10. Caylin Combs and Heather Schoeny scored 13 each to lead Capistrano Valley (3-5).

El Toro 65, Laguna Hills 37--Vicki Mallett had a game-high 30 points for the Chargers in the game at Laguna Hills. The senior guard made 14 of 21 shots from the field, had 7 rebounds and 6 steals for El Toro (7-1, 13-5). Center Julia Monahan led Laguna Hills (2-6) with 12 points.

Irvine 43, San Clemente 23--Irvine built a 12-2 first-quarter lead and never trailed in the game at San Clemente. Nancy Bower led the Vaqueros (4-4, 6-10) with 12 points.
