The Winternationals : Glidden Sets Record in Pro Stock

Pro stock driver Bob Glidden of Whiteland, Ind., established a track speed record Thursday, the opening day of qualifying for the 25th Winternationals at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona.

Glidden, a five-time world champion, hit a top speed of 183 m.p.h. in an elapsed time of 7.63 seconds in his Ford Thunderbird, breaking the pro stock mark of 181.81 he established at the track last October in the World Finals.

Bill Mullins of Pelham, Ala., starting only his second season, was the top qualifier in the top fuel division with an elapsed time of 5.57 seconds and 263 m.p.h. Favorite Don Garlits qualified fifth at 5.89 and 220.26.

John Force of Fullerton was the top funny car qualifier at 5.76 and 246.84. Qualifying will resume at 8 a.m. today, with the finals scheduled for Sunday.
