Two young women, one from Encino, were killed Friday when the speeding sports car in which they were riding spun out of control on a winding mountain road, crashed through a fence and overturned in a water-filled drainage ditch in the Castellammare section of Los Angeles, police said.

Holly Hustedt, 20, of Encino, the driver of the car, and Julianne Keenan, 22, of Malibu were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said they did not yet know if the women drowned or died of injuries suffered in the crash.

Another passenger in the car, Marc Sabatini, 26, of Pacific Palisades, suffered a punctured lung and internal injuries. He was transported to UCLA Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition after undergoing surgery.

Hustedt was a 1982 graduate of William Howard Taft High School.

According to investigators, the car was traveling southbound on Palisades Drive about a half mile north of Sunset Boulevard at about 2:40 a.m. when it failed to negotiate a curve and plunged about 10 feet into a catch basin. The car was upside down in about two feet of water, officer John Arminio said.

Police said the car’s speed was estimated at between 65 and 80 m.p.h. The speed limit for the area is 35 m.p.h.
