Community College Basketball : Cerritos Tries To Keep Win Streak Alive

Seeking its 13th straight win, first-place Cerritos College plays rival Fullerton in a South Coast Conference basketball game tonight in the Hornets’ gym at 7:30.

Cerritos (8-0 in conference and 17-3 overall) completed the first round of conference play undefeated Wednesday, when the Falcons beat Cypress, 60-58. Cerritos, which is led by sophomore guard Joe Yezbak and freshman forward Russell Heicke, began this week as the third-ranked team in the Southland Poll behind No. 1 El Camino and No. 2 Taft.

Fullerton (5-3, 11-10) had a three-game win streak snapped Wednesday when the Hornets lost in the final seconds to second-place Mt. San Antonio, 48-46. The third-place Hornets are led by sophomore forward Michael Long and sophomore guard Jon Samuelson.

Also tonight, Saddleback (4-4, 14-8) will be looking for its fifth straight win when the Gauchos host Mt. San Antonio (7-1, 20-2). Wednesday, sophomore forward Eric Cornly scored a career-high 35 points as Saddleback beat Compton, 81-65. Mt. San Antonio’s only conference loss came at the hands of Cerritos last week.

In other SCC games tonight, Orange Coast (4-4, 13-9) is at Cypress (4-4, 10-8), and Compton (2-6, 7-12) is at Golden West (0-8, 7-14). The Rustlers have lost eight in a row.
