Sweetwater Reserves Don’t Play Reservedly, Win Easily

The Sweetwater High School boys basketball team outscored Mar Vista, 123-54, at Sweetwater High in a Metro Mesa League game on Friday.

“We started our entire third team,” Sweetwater coach Gary Zarecky said. “Our 11th through 15th guys played the entire first quarter.”

Sweetwater led, 15-10, after the first quarter. The usual starters began to enter the game in the second quarter as the No. 3 Red Devils (9-0, 20-2) rolled to the win. It was Sweetwater’s 48th straight Metro Conference win. Sweetwater now has eight straight 20-win seasons.

Larry Willson led Sweetwater with 21 points, Mahlon Williams had 20 and Matt Simmons had 16. In all, 14 players scored for Sweetwater.

“Nobody else has 14 players on the varsity,” Zarecky said.

Bill Bilbray led Mar Vista (1-8, 3-14) with 14 points.

Coronado 49, Marian 39--At Coronado, the Islanders (1-8, 3-13) won their first Metro South Bay League game of the season against Marian, a team that beat Coronado by 35 points earlier this season. Coronado’s Bill Ward scored a game-high 18 points, Chad Demon added 13 and sophomore Jay Melotte had 8 points and 17 assists. David Nunez led Marian (2-7, 4-13) with 14 points.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Carlsbad 81, Escondido 71-The Lancers (5-4, 12-7) had their biggest offensive output of the season at the Cougars’ expense. Rick White led Carlsbad with 21 points, Eric Bodman had 16, David Mequet scored 13 and Robert McGrew 12. Mequet also grabbed 16 rebounds. Darin Sommer led Escondido (1-8, 2-14) with 24 points. Paul Baldwin scored 16 points.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Hoover 75, Christian 68-The Cardinals, led by Keith Williams, Ken Matthews and Sam Aguirre, defeated Christian at El Cajon. Williams had 24 points, Matthews scored 20 and Aguirre scored 19. Hoover, the City Central League leaders, is 6-1, 18-3. Christian’s Bill Donley led all scorers with 28 points. The Patriots fell to 2-5, 11-7.

sg CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Morse 78, Serra 57-No. 5 Morse rolled to its sixth City Eastern win in seven tries. David Harden scored 28 points, 14 of them in the third period. David Gayden (13 points) and Paul Bryant (10 points) also helped the Tigers up their record to 12-4. High man for the Conquistadors (3-4, 12-7) was Deven Moran with 17.

Point Loma 51, Madison 48--The Warhawks (2-5, 8-10) were leading most of the way, but a basket by Dale Bryant and Orlando Hill’s free throw gave the Pointers a come-from-behind win. Hill led Point Loma (3-4, 14-6) with 15 points. Bryant scored 12 and had 8 rebounds. Jimmy Dean paced Madison with 24.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Kearny 55, University 53--Brad Milhoan scored a game-high 20 points to lead the first-place Komets (6-2, 15-6) to victory. Steve Dailey had 17 points, and Pat Castro added 10. University (4-3, 12-10) was led by Pat Marsh, who scored 19 points, Sean Giles had 15, and Ken Zampese had 10.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Santana 74, El Cajon 47--The Sultans led, 18-7, after one quarter and, 36-16, at halftime en route to the win at Santana High. Jeff Barry led Santana (7-6, 13-7) with 16 points and Jeff Tatum, the county’s leading scorer, had 13. Billy Mathis added 10 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Craig Walker led El Cajon (4-8, 7-11) with a game-high 18 points.

El Capitan 42, Valhalla 41-- Mike Pellieter’s last-second 18-footer bounced off the front of the rim and with it fell Valhalla’s chance for an upset at Grossmont High. Valhalla led the entire game, until El Capitan took the lead with four minutes to go. The Vaqueros went up by six points with two minutes to play, but Valhalla cut the lead with three steals.

Mitch Burton led El Capitan (11-1, 15-4) with 17 points and Steve Burroughs added 15. Sophomore Eric Lazoya scored 16 points and had 10 steals for Valhalla (7-6, 9-12).

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Poway 100, Fallbrook 44--The top-rated Titans (9-0, 19-0) jumped out to a 25-5 first quarter lead and coasted to the win at Poway High. Poway’s Jud Buechler scored a game-high 24 points and John Colborne scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds. Dominick Johnson added 14 points and Gary Anderson had 12. Andy Heatherman came off the bench to grab eight rebounds for Poway. Fallbrook drops to 2-6, 2-14.

Vista 58, Orange Glen 47--Ron Howard scored 21 points as the Panthers (5-4, 10-10) won at home. Chris Hayes and Mike Jones added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kyle Ruggles led the Patriots (2-6, 5-10) with 12.
