UC Irvine Men’s Tennis Team Beats Northridge

The UC Irvine men’s tennis team improved its record to 4-0 Friday by defeating Cal State Northridge, 9-0, in a nonconference match at Irvine.

The Anteaters were led by their No. 1 singles player, Bruce Man Son Hing, who defeated Northridge’s Bill Johnson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Irvine plays host to the University of San Diego (6-0) in another nonconference match Sunday.

The Anteaters women’s team suffered their first loss Friday, bowing to 10th-ranked Pepperdine, 5-4, on the UCI courts. Irvine’s only singles winner was Haruko Shigekawa, who defeated Margret Hopkins, 6-7, 6-1, 4-2. Hopkins quit the match in the seventh game of the third set.

UCI, which fell to 5-1, plays at Cal State Long Beach Tuesday.

In other action:

Chapman College men’s team, ranked No. 2 in Division 2, dropped its opening match of the season to Cal, 8-1, on the Berkeley courts.

The Bears’ Steve DeVries, ranked 20th in Division 1 singles, defeated the Panthers’ Troy Turnbull, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match.

Chapman’s lone victory was in the No. 3 doubles match as John Kline and Chris Dundas beat Curt Streeter and Brian Flowers, 7-5, 6-3.

Chapman, on a three-match road trip, plays today at San Jose State.
