A UC Irvine research team has received a $3-million grant to continue studying the effects of Fairview State Hospital’s Foster Grandparent Program, which involves senior citizens working with Fairview’s developmentally disabled clients.

After three years of research, the team has found that senior citizens receive significant benefits from the program. One of the team’s goals is to find programs that will increase the activity and involvement of older people.

The grant was given by the National Institute on Aging.

With the money, researchers will study 300 senior citizens over five years. The participants will undergo treadmill tests, brain-wave testing, sleep research and a “whole battery of other (tests) for memory and retention,” said Francis Crinella, director of Costa Mesa’s Fairview State Hospital.

“We know . . . that the people in our program seem to feel better and be more mentally alert and happier,” Crinella said.
