High school football players can’t sign national letters of intent until Wednesday, Feb. 13. However, with less than a week before the college signing deadline, San Diego State football recruiting coordinator Brian Billick said the Aztecs have had their best recruiting year since he joined Doug Scovil’s staff in 1980.

“This is the first year we’ve had to turn kids down,” Billick said. “This is definitely our best year overall in terms of numbers.”

The Aztecs plan to sign 30 players. Billick said that USC, UCLA, Oregon State, Washington and Arizona have a maximum of 18 scholarships this year, and that has given the Aztecs an edge in recruiting West Coast players.

Six players have verbally committed to attend SDSU.

Defensive lineman Kelly Kamaka (6-foot 3-inches, 205 pounds) and offensive lineman Randy Uyehara, both from Kameha Meha High School in Honolulu, selected SDSU over the University of Hawaii.

“Kamaka is very quick and an excellent pass rusher,” Billick said, “and Uyehara has good feet.”

Tight ends Mitch and Brad, twins from El Capitan, have said they will attend SDSU. Mitch is 6-4, 220 and will probably play tight end for the Aztecs. Brad is 6-4, 240 and might be used as a lineman.

Linebacker Cisco Combs of Sweetwater (6-2, 190) also has said he will attend SDSU.

Offensive tackle and linebacker Tom Holler (6-2, 240) of La Quinta, the Times’ Lineman of the Year in Orange County, said he will attend SDSU if the Aztecs have a spot for him. Billick said Holler would be one of the first players on the waiting list to be given a scholarship if a spot opened.

Holler also is waiting to see if a position opens at Cal but has said he would rather attend SDSU.
