Empire League : Hakeman, El Dorado Stop Los Alamitos

Bart Hakeman scored 32 points and El Dorado High School’s defense held Los Alamitos forward Paul Crandall to just nine points as the Golden Hawks downed the Griffins, 70-50, in Empire League play at El Dorado Friday night.

Crandall, who had been averaging 24 points in his last six games, attempted just five shots as the Griffins had trouble getting the ball inside.

El Dorado (10-2 in league and 19-3 overall) streaked to a 13-3 advantage in the first five minutes and led by 12 points, 20-8, at the end of the first quarter. Hakeman and Jim Mansfield combined for 16 of the Golden Hawks’ 20 first-quarter points.

Los Alamitos closed to within two points at the end of the third quarter, 42-40. But El Dorado, paced by Hakeman’s 14 fourth-quarter points, outscored the Griffins, 28-10, in the final period.

Forward Andy Woods led the Griffins (7-5, 10-11) with 12 points, and Crandall grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds.

Katella 62, Cypress 49--Tied, 17-17, at the end of the first quarter, the Knights outscored the Centurions, 32-10, over the next two quarters at Cypress. Katella (9-3, 17-4) was led by Steve Bennett’s 18 points. Eric Krivashei’s game-high 23 points led Cypress (2-10, 4-15).

Loara 55, Esperanza 45--Forward Damiam Porreca scored 18 points and added 10 rebounds as the host Saxons (4-8, 8-12) beat the Aztecs (3-9, 7-13). Loara built a 15-point lead early in the second quarter and were never challenged. Forward John Parker and guard Brian Shinoda added 12 points each for Loara while guard Bob Anthony led Esperanza with 13 points.
