The City Council has adopted a series of regulations for television satellite-signal receiving dishes.

Prompted by complaints from several residents, the council passed guidelines Monday night saying that satellite dishes can be located only in rear yards, may not be placed on roofs and can be no higher than 10 feet from ground level.

The action was taken after several north Artesia residents complained about a tall antenna from a newly installed dish in their neighborhood. Council members stopped short of requiring dish owners to hide or “screen” their dishes and antennas with landscaping, a measure recommended by the city’s Planning Commission.

Satellite dishes are used to pick up TV signals conventional antennas cannot reach. Mayor James Van Horn said the council decided against setting a size limit on the diameter of dishes because they are getting increasingly smaller as technology improves.
