PREP BASKETBALL : Garden Grove League : Rancho Alamitos’ Hong Beats Garden Grove

Guard John Hong scored on a layup and a foul shot with 10 seconds remaining to give Rancho Alamitos a 52-51 win over Garden Grove on Wednesday.

Hong’s score marked the first time the Vaqueros had the lead. They trailed by seven points at halftime. Garden Grove had a four-point lead with two minutes remaining and went into a delay game, but Rancho Alamitos stole the ball twice to be in a position to win.

After Hong’s three-point play, the Argonauts called timeout to set up a shot. However, Hong stole the ball in the corner.

Guard Roger Carter had 13 points for the Vaqueros (8-1). Ruben Patton added 10 points.

GARDEN GROVE (51)--Crone 4, Duran 13, O’Connor 11, Kaser 7, Fournier 2, Kanagae 4, Guibord 10.

RANCHO ALAMITOS (52)--Patton 10, Carter 13, Perry 5, Nguyen 9, Hong 7, Velasquez 4, Tryon 4.

Bolsa Grande 38, La Quinta 34--Neither team shot well in this game. The Matadors hit only 15 of 58 shots but came away with win. David Valdez, who ended the game with 12 points hit two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to secure the game for Bolsa Grande (4-5).

LA QUINTA (34)--St. John 17, Barker 4, Zugates 4, Recktenwald 7, Molin 2.

BOLSA GRANDE (38)--Cao 7, Afdahl 6, Macelwee 6, Rudy 4, Nguyen 3, Valdez 12.

Santiago 43, Los Amigos 32--The Cavaliers moved into a three-way tie for second place with the win at home. Santiago (5-4, 12-9) meets La Quinta Friday with a possible playoff berth at stake.
