Girls Roundup : Brea Sweeps By Valencia, 91-32, to Finish Undefeated in Regular Season

Brea-Olinda High School girls basketball team swept aside Valencia, 91-32, in Orange League play Thursday night and in the process completed its regular season undefeated.

The Wildcats, the Southern Section 2-A runner up last year, finished with a 10-0 league record (25-0 overall). It marks the third straight Orange League title for the Wildcats, ranked No. 1 in Orange County and the Southern Section 3-A division.

Brea center Laura Thomas led all scorers with 22 points. Jodi Kleber (18 points), Pam Chiotti (15), Carrie Egan (12) scored in double figures for the Wildcats.

Valencia was led by Heather Sandoval’s seven points.

In other Orange League action:

Magnolia 64, Anaheim 24--Michelle Carter closed her junior season with 38 points, 20 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for the Sentinels (3-7, 8-13). Tami Bartley had 8 points for the Colonists.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 91, Bishop Amat 31--Mary Gainey had a season-high 33 points to lead the Monarchs (10-0, 23-3). Everyone on its roster scored for Mater Dei, which shot 60% from the field. Sharon Maile had eight points for the Lancers.

In Century League action:

Foothill 66, Canyon 33--Jennifer Osur had 19 points and 9 assists for the visiting Knights (14-0, 22-3), who finished unbeaten in league for second straight season. Osur, a senior guard, made 9 of 12 from the free-throw line. Danyell Rogers had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Comanches (8-6, 13-9).

In Empire League action:

Kennedy 59, El Dorado 54--The two teams tied for third place and will have a playoff game to determine the Southern Section playoff representative. The site and time will be announced at a 10:30 a.m. meeting today. Janelle Frese had 20 points for the Fighting Irish. Jill Matyuch had a game-high 23 points for the Golden Hawks (9-5, 12-9). Kennedy is 9-5.

Loara 35, Los Alamitos 29--Susan Osato had 13 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists for the Saxons, who finished second in league with an 11-3 mark (20-6 overall). Kelli Moore had 11 points for the Griffins (6-8 in league).

Esperanza 57, Cypress 38--Sharon Warmus (18 points) and Sharisse Simon (14) led the visiting Aztecs to the victory, which clinched the league championship. Esperanza finished 14-0 in league.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 66, Sonora 44--Pam Fritch scored 15 points and Gigi BanDissel and Sandra Williams added 14 apiece to lead the visiting Indians (8-2, 23-5).

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 58, Laguna Beach 16--Sea King guard Fran Wynn had 33 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in the victory at Laguna Beach. K.C. Jones added 14 points for Corona del Mar (12-2, 15-6).

Woodbridge 51, Newport Harbor 29--Holly Ingraham and Jill Daniels had 16 points and 11 rebounds each for the Warriors. KellyAnn Wilson had 17 rebounds for Woodbridge (14-0, 23-3). Suzanne Shriner had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Sailors (8-6), who tied Costa Mesa for third place. The two teams will meet in a playoff game to decide the league’s third playoff representative.

In South Coast Leauge action:

El Toro 57, Capistrano Valley 32--Senior guard Vicki Mallett had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting Chargers, who finished in a first-place tie with Mission Viejo. Both teams finished 11-1. Center Jennifer Uecke added 10 points for El Toro (17-5 overall). Kaylin Combs led the Cougars with 10 points.

Irvine 63, Laguna Hills 44--The visiting Vaqueros trailed, 27-25, at halftime, but outscored the Hawks, 45-30, in the second half. Irvine’s Dina Graham led all scorers with 19 points, 13 in the second half. Shelly Moceri and Nancy Bauer had 16 and 11, respectively, for Irvine (7-5, 9-11). Leanda Caudette scored 12 points for the Hawks.

In Sunset League action

Edison 50, Marina 49 (OT)--The Vikings (3-7, 10-14) had a 4-point lead with 33 seconds left in overtime, but a Charger basket and three free throws by Michelle Hennessey gave visiting Edison the victory. Marina guard Stephine Sabelino led all scorers with 18 points. Martha Noffsinger had 16 and Kristen Wilson 10 for the Chargers (6-4, 14-10).

Fountain Valley 56, Huntington Beach 23--Jackie Cook scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds to help the Barons earn a league co-championship with Ocean View in the Barons’ gym. Dawn Lawler added 10 points for the Barons (9-1, 18-6). Kelly Murray led the Oilers with 8 points.

Ocean View 88, Westminster 39--Laura Simek (22 rebounds) and Dana Douty (15 assists) broke school records for the host Seahawks (9-1, 19-5). Simek, a senior forward, led Ocean View with 22 points. Forward Michelle Chomicz and center Trina Vlachos added 17 points each for the Seahawks, who tied Fountain Valley for the league championship.
