Late Free Throws Help Toreros Upset Second-Place Santa Clara

Six free throws in the final 56 seconds enabled the University of San Diego to beat Santa Clara, 60-57, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game Friday night in Toso Pavilion at Santa Clara.

Torero forward Steve Krallman hit three of the free throws, guard Chris Carr added two and guard Peter Murphy had one. Carr’s free throws with 26 seconds left gave USD a 58-54 lead.

Murphy led USD with 19 points, tying his season-high. Anthony Reuss had 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Toreros. Carr and Scott Thompson had 10 each.

Santa Clara center Nick Vanos had 17 points and 9 rebounds, and forward Scott Lamson had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Harold Keeling, who scored 32 points when Santa Clara played the Toreros in San Diego, was limited to 14.

USD (3-4 in conference, 14-8 overall) is tied with Gonzaga for fourth place in the WCAC. The Broncos (5-2, 16-7) are in second place, a game behind Pepperdine.
