United Medical Services, an association of 100 South Bay physicians who own and operate medical facilities, has established a computerized physicians referral service for people who wish to be matched with family practitioners or specialists near their homes or workplaces, or with physicians who speak foreign languages. The service is free and referrals are made to physicians who are members of United Medical Services, according to Dr. Norman R. Zinner, a Torrance urologist and president of the organization.

Callers are mailed the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three physicians. A follow-up questionnaire is sent to the caller to determine his or her satisfaction with the services. On their first visits, patients receive identification cards, eliminating the need to complete basic patient information forms when referred to other participating physicians. Further information is available from the United Medical Services office.
