College Baseball : Titans’ Rally Is Stopped in 9th by Pomona

Cal Poly Pomona pitcher Mike Patterson relieved starter Mike Munoz with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday and struck out Cal State Fullerton pinch-hitter Kevin Reimer to stifle the Titans’ rally and preserve the Broncos’ 11-10 nonconference victory at Titan Field.

Fullerton (6-7), powered by Alan Stankiewicz’s two-run double, had scored four runs in the inning off Munoz.

Stankiewicz finished with three hits and three RBIs, while John Fishel went 2 for 4 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

In other nonconference action:

USC 5, UC Irvine 4--Trailing, 4-3, the Trojans scored two runs in the seventh inning on a misplayed fly ball to center field and held off a late Anteater rally in the win at USC. Irvine catcher Steve Morgan’s sacrifice fly scored Paul Hammond in the ninth, but Mike Fay grounded out to second to end the game. The Trojans improved to 7-4 and the Anteaters fell to 5-6-1.

Southern California College 10, Redlands 2--Ron Nelson hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Dave Turney hit a solo homer in the fifth to lead the Vanguards to the victory over the Bulldogs in Costa Mesa in a game that was called after seven innings because of darkness.

In community college action:

Cypress 14, Santa Monica 8--Brian Flatten, Bert Lizarrada and Jim Jackle each had three hits to help the Chargers win in the first round of the Mt. San Antonio Tournament at Walnut. Jackle hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, while Lizarrada scored three runs and had three RBIs.

Fullerton 8, L.A. Mission 2--Jeff Oberdank hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Rodney Clark had a solo blast in the second to help the Hornets win in the Mt. SAC Tournament. Gabriel Rodriguez was the winning pitcher in relief.

Saddleback 9, Rio Hondo 2--Jim Devine broke open a 3-2 game in the bottom of the sixth inning a grand slam to help the Gauchos defeat Rio Hondo, 9-2, at Saddleback. Doug Royalty pitched a three-hitter through eight innings to earn the victory, while reliever Craig Spencer struck out the side in the ninth. The Gauchos are 2-0.
