Area Roundup : CS Fullerton Men in Soccer Finals

The Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team will be competing in the finals of the 1985 Coors Speedsoccer College Tournament this weekend at Fountain Valley’s Los Caballeros Sport and Racquet Club.

The Titans will meet UC Santa Clara Saturday in a quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. That will be followed by Cal State Los Angeles vs. San Diego State, Nevada Las Vegas vs. the Kapa Cruisers (team composed of Chapman College players) and Cal State Hayward vs. Valley United (composed of Cal State Northridge players).

Winners will advance to the semifinals, beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, while the championship game will be played at 4 p.m. Sunday. The consolation game is noon Sunday, followed by the third-place game at 2.

All-day tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children under 16. Los Caballeros also will play host to a women’s college tournament, featuring UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Irvine, Sonoma State, UC Santa Clara and Chapman College on March 2-3.

The Orange County Special Olympics Track and Field Meet, sponsored by the Cypress Rotary Club, will be held March 2 at Cypress College.

More than 1,000 participants are expected, with winners advancing to the State Games in May at Berkeley. Winners at Berkeley will be eligible for national and international competition.

Events, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., include a wheelchair race, blind race, 50-, 200- and 400-meter runs, softball throw, standing long jump, golf driving and a Frisbee throw.

UC Irvine, under new Coach Vince O’Boyle, opens its men’s track and field season Saturday with a four-team, non-scoring meet with USC, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Northridge. Competition begins with the hammer throw at noon. Running events begin at 2 p.m.

O’Boyle is serving as the Anteaters’ interim coach this season, replacing Kevin McNair, who resigned in January to enter private business. O’Boyle is also the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams at UCI.

Registration has begun for the Newport Beach Parks and Recreation Dept. adult men’s spring basketball leagues.

Leagues will be divided into three divisions, with “A” being strongest and “C” being weakest. All teams will play 11 games, at Corona del Mar High School, and Ensign and Lincoln Junior High Schools.

The season starts with classification games March 18, with league play beginning March 25.

Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Kirk Collins, the Ram cornerback who died from cancer one year ago.
