Pac-10 Roundup : Oregon Scores a 43-40 Upset Over Arizona

Greg Trapp sank a desperation jumper with 1:29 left, and Oregon rallied to upset Arizona, 43-40, in a Pacific 10 basketball game Thursday night at Tucson.

Trapp rebounded a missed layup by teammate Chris Harper and threw up a three-footer as he was falling to the court to put the Ducks ahead, 41-40.

The Wildcats were forced to foul to get the ball back, and Oregon missed the first shot both times--the last with eight seconds left.

Pete Williams’ attempted hook shot and Eddie Smith’s try for a tap-in both failed, however, and Harper was fouled with six seconds left. His successful free throws made it 43-40, and the Duck victory was sealed when Smith was called for an offensive foul with two seconds remaining.

The Wildcats had their seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 19-7 overall and 10-4 in the Pac-10. The loss kept Arizona in a first-place tie with USC.

Oregon is 13-13 and 6-7.

Anthony Taylor paced the Ducks with a game-high 20 points, while Blair Rasmussen added 10. Williams was the only Wildcat in double figures with 11 points.

Oregon State 75, Arizona State 64--A.C. Green scored 17 points and Steve Woodside added 15 as the Beavers held on to beat the Sun Devils at Tempe, Ariz.

Trailing, 42-30, at halftime, the Sun Devils cut the deficit to 52-49 on Bobby Thompson’s three-point play with 14:04 remaining.

Eric Knox, who had 11 points, sank four free throws in a three-minute span for a 60-53 Oregon State lead. Darryl Flowers’ foul shots with 7:50 left made it 62-56, and Green added consecutive lay-ins during a 12-second span for a 66-56 cushion with 4:10 left.

Thompson’s jumper with 2:08 remaining brought Arizona State back within 68-62. Dean Derrah and Woodside each sank two free throws, however, and Green hit one before adding a slam dunk with four seconds remaining.

Oregon State is 19-5 overall and 9-4 in the Pac-10, just a half-game out of the lead.

Arizona State fell to 11-14 and 6-9.
