San Diego Prep Basketball : GIRLS 2-A: El Camino Wary of University, Not Letdown
The El Camino High School girls basketball team has been favored to win the San Diego Section 2-A title since day one of the 1984-85 basketball season. Well, that title game has finally arrived.
“This is what we’ve been working for,” El Camino Coach Ray Johnson said. “I’m not worried about a letdown.”
El Camino will play University for the title at 2:30 p.m. today at the Sports Arena. El Camino lost the championship game to Point Loma, 64-47, last season. Before the 1984-85 school year, Point Loma switched to 3-A, in which it will compete for the section championship.
El Camino (25-1) is led by the county’s all-time career leading scorer, Sharon Turner. This season Turner averaged 34.7 points per game. Sheri Williamson (16.5-point average) and Vicki Evans (16.4) helped Turner give El Camino the highest-scoring offense in the county, averaging 88.5 points. The Wildcats also have the second-leading defense, allowing 31.3 points.
University (21-3) is led by Heidi Erpelding, who averaged 16.7 points.
