Nevada Las Vegas Women Top Irvine

The University of Nevada Las Vegas women’s basketball team clinched at least a tie for the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. championship with a 78-65 victory over second-place UC Irvine (6-2, 20-6) Wednesday at Las Vegas.

The Rebels (8-0, 22-3) took a 42-32 halftime lead and used its superior rebounding to control the game. Las Vegas outrebounded Irvine, 40-30.

Four Rebel players scored in double figures, led by guard Misty Thomas, who had a game-high 22 points. Irvine center Jackie Vander Poel had 13 points and forward Dorothy Lewis added 10.

The Anteaters’ loss to the 18th-ranked Rebels marked the end of conference play for Irvine. Las Vegas has two games against Hawaii remaining before the Rebels, Irvine, Hawaii and UC Santa Barbara will compete in the conference tournament March 9-10 at Irvine.
