Gunmen who stole an automobile belonging to a teacher in East Los Angeles may also have stolen the college hopes of hundreds of Latino students as well, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Files of the United Hispanic College Fund were in the car taken by two armed Spanish-speaking youths who accosted Renny Mendez-Martin, who heads the fund, and East Los Angeles Community College teacher Alicia Sandoval in the college parking lot. Mendez-Martin said the files are necessary to obtain scholarships for the students. She said the car, a 1979 Mercury Zephyr, California license plate 483 WPJ, also contained 400 envelopes containing flyers announcing a Hispanic consumer awards luncheon to be held next week.
